Box Score Maryville Opens 1-2 at Berry Invitational
ROME, Ga. – Maryville rallied to win Saturday's fourth set against Sewanee and appeared to have momentum, but the Tigers prevailed in five to hand the Scots at 3-2 defeat.
Maryville won the first set 25-20, lost the next two by 25-21 and 25-23 counts, won the fourth 25-18 and then lost 15-6 in the fifth.
The Scots went 1-2 in their opening weekend, defeating Mississippi University for Women 3-0 and losing 3-0 to host Berry. Both of those matches took place Friday. Sewanee is now 2-0, having opened with a 3-0 sweep of Huntingdon.
"We are extremely thankful to be on the court together," Maryville head coach Kandis Schram said. "Competing, getting to know each other, and sharing our journey with our fans in person has been incredible.
"Saturday was a disappointing match, but we will regroup and learn from it and get back to work Monday."
In Saturday's deciding fifth set, the Scots led 2-1 when Sewanee went on an 8-0 run. The Tigers pushed it to an 11-3 advantage and Maryville never was able to recover in the 15-6 result.
Isabella Samson and Meredith Bonee posted double-doubles for the Scots. Samson had 13 kills and four service aces to lead the team in both categories, while Bonee led the squad in assists with 28 and digs with 18.
Maryville is back in action next weekend in Atlanta, with three matches at the Oglethorpe Invitational.
