KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville wrapped up its fall schedule but carries lots of momentum into the men's tennis offseason.
The Scots dropped a 7-2 decision at Johnson on Wednesday, but head coach
Doug Corbett liked what he saw out of his developing squad.
"I am very proud of the effort we put forth," Corbett said. "This was certainly the best we have played this fall. We are a much-improved team this year, but Johnson is as well so credit to them."
Jonathan Crane and
Jackson Meyer teamed for an 8-4 doubles victory, and Crane nearly pulled out his singles match. The Ackworth, Georgia, first-year dropped his third-set tiebreaker by a 13-11 count.
"The effort by
Jonathan Crane in singles was sensational," Corbett said. "He played a very high quality of tennis, back and forth he pushed an opponent to the brink who would be a high starter in our league.
Cooper Newman got a solid win, and we saw a lot of the technical improvements he made in the last year pay off in this match. I am very happy for him."
Newman prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to claim the lone Maryville victory in singles. Also in action for the Scots were
Kyle Shaver,
Sam Cocchia and
Kaleb Burke.
The Scots are back in action Feb. 25 at Roanoke.
