Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Maryville waited an extra day to get its spring season underway, but it was well worth the delay.
The Scots opened their 2023 slate with a 6-3 road triumph over Randolph.
Maryville swept the doubles points, with
Kyle Shaver and
Kaleb Burke teaming for one 8-0 victory and
Josh Fisher and
Seth Green combining for another. But it was the first-year duo of
Jackson Meyer and
Jonathan Crane who produced the biggest doubles victory, an 8-7 triumph that saw them rally from a 7-4 deficit.
Meyer, Fisher and Green showed Maryville's depth this season by winning singles matches at the 4, 5 and 6 positions to close out the victory. Meyer and Green won in straight sets, while Fisher rallied from a set down to ultimately claim the third-set tiebreaker.
"I'm very happy to get our first win of the spring!" Scots head coach
Doug Corbett said. "The doubles sweep, capped off by an awesome comeback by Jackson and JC from 4-7 down, really set the tone. We had our ups and downs in singles, but our goal is to learn from each of our matches and improve as the season progresses.
"This is just the first match of a long season."
The Scots are in action again Thursday in their home opener against Brevard. Start time is 2 p.m.
