Scots Spend Fall Break at ITA Championship

Men's Tennis Competes with Top D3 Programs in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -  Maryville College's men's tennis team had a weekend in which everyone got to get in the win column in either singles or doubles, competing in the ITA D3 South Regional Championship.

Taking place at Leftwich Tennis Center and Rhodes college in Memphis, Tennessee, the Scots had their strongest showing ever at the event headlined with tennis powerhouses, including Emory University, Sewanee, Rhodes College, and North Carolina Wesleyan University.

Doubles was the strong point for Maryville over the weekend. While no team was in the top flight, pair Luka Romano and Benjamin Schneider won a gritty match against a formidable Mississippi University for Women team, taking the match 7-6 (8-6) in an incredible match. This marks the first ever doubles win for the Scots in the B draw of the tournament, and after they played a great match against an Emory pair, but unfortunately losing 3-6.

The other pairs competed in the C draw and made two separate finals. Field Myatt and Eric Vornhagen played fantastic doubles throughout the weekend, dispatching great teams with ease, winning their matches 6-2, 6-3, and 6-4 to make the C draw final, falling in the final to a strong Asbury University team to take 2nd place. Eli Cauthorn and Albrecht Gaby also played strong doubles over the course of the weekend. After dropping a nailbiter of an opening round match 6-7 (3-7), they stormed through the consolation draw, dispatching two Covenant College teams 6-3 to make the final of the backdraw, ultimately falling to a team from the University of the Ozarks 3-6.

Combined, Maryville went 6-4 in doubles over the weekend, building on the strong doubles results they've had within the past year.

Singles also had some strong results. Schneider recorded two wins in the C2 draw of singles, the most out of the team. Gabriel Villalonga Serra, Gaby, and Myatt also recorded wins in singles, with Myatt winning the first A draw match in program history for the Scots. In total, the Scots got 5 singles wins, the most at the Championships in program history.

The season continues for the Scots. Next, they head to Johnson University for a scrimmage to prepare for the Fall Foliage Classic, taking place at Piedmont University. The scrimmage will be Thursday, October 15th. The Classic will be one week after that, taking place October 23rd and 24th.
