DEMOREST, Ga. - Maryville College's men's tennis team headed to Piedmont University to compete in the Fall Foliage Classic for the second year in a row. The Scots competed, battling for singles wins against two Piedmont teams as well as Berry College, and left the fall season with positives to look back on.Â
On Friday, the Scots competed against Berry in doubles and Piedmont in singles, with close results on the singles side of the day. In the first Piedmont singles match, Eli Cauthorn had the closest affair, competing in a nail-biter. Battling for over two hours, Cauthorn fought from behind to take the match to a third set but ultimately lost to a formidable Piedmont opponent 4-6, 6-3, 3-10. In the second Piedmont match, the Scots took the overall win 4-2, with three Scots winning in third-set tiebreakers.Â
Benjamin Schneider was the first one to notch a point for the Scots, taking his opponent down with a straight-sets scoreline of 7-5, 6-2. Gabriel Villalonga Serra was the next to put a point on the board for Maryville, battling from behind and proving his experience in pressure scenarios. After losing the first set 1-6, he swung the momentum his way to ease through the second set 6-2 and squeak out a third-set tiebreak 11-9 to put the Scots up 2-1. Eric Vornhagen also fought from behind, losing the first set in his match 2-6 before dialing it up and digging in the second and third sets to move the match in his favor, ending with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory.Â
After Piedmont made the score 3-2, Field Myatt closed it out, having a "never say die" mentality to battle from behind and have a match that was very similar to Vornhagen's. Losing the first set, Myatt pushed his opponent to the brink of exhaustion through his offensive pressure and won in a tightly contested match with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 scoreline.
Saturday started with doubles against Piedmont and ended with singles against Berry, resulting in a day very similar to the first. While no player managed to notch a win for the Scots, Cauthorn and Vornhagen had incredible contests that were full of grit. Vornhagen had a close contest that had him winning the first set and pushing a very good Viking to the very end, but unfortunately he fell 6-3, 4-6, 7-10. Similarly to Vornhagen, Cauthorn played a high-level match with many fun points and pressure moments, but ultimately lost 6-7 (8-10), 5-7.Â
These matches conclude the fall season for the Scots, who made program history during their events, following suit from their historic 2025-2026 season.Â
