KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Winning three out of four singles matches left Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett with a very good feeling about his women's tennis squad heading into the winter break.
Corbett watched Courtlyn Walsh,
Abby Diggs and
Elizabeth Shwaiko all take straight-set victories against the Royals. But Maryville's four-player team was forced to forfeit one doubles match and two singles matches in the ultimate 6-3 decision.
"Going in, we were not worried about the forfeits," Corbett said. "Our goal was to win more matches than we lost. We very nearly did that, going 3-3 and a tiebreaker away from 4-2.
"Great effort from our women. Happy for Abby to break through with a close win after she had many close losses last year. And Courtlyn performed well against a good player."
Diggs claimed her match 7-5, 6-2, while Walsh was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) winner. Shwaiko completed a third singles victory with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
Katelyn Cook playing at No. 1 in singles and doubles lost a pair of tough matches.
"We need our captain,
Eliza Cheshire, to get healthy and we need to find a sixth player," Corbett said. "If we do that, then we have the potential for a great spring season."
The Scots are back in action Feb. 25 at Roanoke.
