Sparkling Debut for Scots

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maryville's first women's track and field competition, the Sewanee Early Season Invitational, turned into an old-fashioned dual meet between the Scots and host Tigers.
 
And it was a blast.
 
MC's newest varsity program picked up event wins from Brianna Jemison in the 200m and Kelci Sparks in the weight throw to highlight the afternoon on Monteagle Mountain. Jemison crossed the line in 29.47 seconds, while Sparks won her competition with a throw of 10.83 meters.

"I was excited and pleased with our effort and performances," Scots Director of Track & Field Kunle Lawson said. "As with anything new, there will be some growing pains. But we know where we stand and have a better idea of what we need to do to improve.

"I'm proud of everyone for this step forward in our program."
 
Maryville had three of the top four finishers in the weight throw. Audrey Sanders was third with a toss of 7.74 meters and Chesney Ball fourth at 4.30 meters. Sparks (8.26m), Sanders (6.60m) and Ball (3.91m) finished 2-3-4 for the Scots in the shot put.
 
Jemison was second in the 55m dash in 8.09 seconds, followed by teammates Cadance Kent in 8.67 and Carla Guenzi in 8.86. Kent was fourth in the 200m in 40.38 seconds. In the 400m run, Maryville's Kristina Buckley was second in 1:19.17.
 
Maryville returns to Sewanee on Jan. 28 for the Tiger Indoor Invitational.
