Scots Ride Big First Half at Huntingdon

Box Score

Maryville Rolls 95-80 to 13th Straight Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Maryville turned in another impressive road start and posted a 95-80 victory at Huntingdon on Saturday afternoon.

That's 13 straight wins for the No. 12-ranked team in the country.

The Scots scored 55 first-half points, shooting nearly 58 percent from the floor over those first 20 minutes and making nine 3-pointers. Maryville finished the game 11-of-22 from downtown.

"I was really happy with the approach," Maryville head coach Raul Placeres said. "Did we get better today on defense? Yes. But we almost scored 100 points on the road as well, so a great all-around game."

Saturday was almost a carbon copy of Maryville's fast start at LaGrange two weekends ago, with Chase Ridenour sizzling again right out of the gate. Ridenour scored 17 of the team's first 21 points, helping the Scots to a 21-7 advantage over the Hawks with 15:02 showing on the first-half clock.

Ridenour in that stretch was 5-of-5 from long range on his way to 24 points in the first half and a career-high 27 by game's end.

"The guy couldn't miss," Placeres said. "It was just like at LaGrange and exactly what you need on the road."

Nearly a First-Half Scoring High

Maryville kept the Hawks at bay the rest of the half and led 55-38 at intermission. The 55 points were one shy of the 56 the Scots scored against Brevard back on Jan. 14.

Huntingdon tried to make a game of it in the second half, twice pulling within 10 points. But the Scots never let the Hawks cut it to single digits, and then Maryville pulled away at the end.

Myles Rasnick scored 23 points in support of Ridenour, and Felix Uadiale added 17 points to go with seven boards. JR Sanders scored 11 points and handed out a career-high 13 assists. The Scots' point guard added five steals against just one turnover.

"Felix was dominant on the block," Placeres said. "He had three or four dunks in the second half, and he made his free throws (5-of-6). I was proud of him. And Myles was Myles once again, and JR filled up the stat sheet."

Sanders Makes Run at Record

Placeres pointed out one coaching oversight in the second half.

"If I had known JR had that many assists, I would have taken him out," he said with a laugh. "I can't let anyone break my record!"

Placeres' program record of 17 assists, set during the 2003-04 season, remains safe for at least another game.

Huntingdon was led by 20 points from Damien Madison. The Hawks fell to 6-12 overall and 0-7 in the USA South.

Maryville improved to 17-1 overall and 7-0 in conference. The Scots have a quick turnaround with a Tuesday game at Brevard.

"I'm proud of our guys," Placeres said. "This was one of our farthest road trips, and it was a long wait during the day before we tipped off.

"Now it's on to the next one. We've got to be ready for a Brevard team that is in the hunt. They will give us their best shot."
