RALEIGH, N.C. – Maryville split the doubleheader on Day 1 of the Meredith/William Peace Tournament, improving to 5-2 on the season.
The Scots defeated Brevard 3-1 in Friday's first match but fell to Meredith 3-1 in the second half of the doubleheader. Maryville has now won eight straight contests against the Tornados dating back to 2018.
Against Brevard, Maryville won each of the first two sets 25-16, dropped the third 27-25 before dominating in the fourth to win 25-12. The Scots attacked at .241 compared to just .008 from Brevard. Maryville posted 44 kills, led by 11 from
Landry Frisch and nine from
Isabella Samson.
Meredith Bonee narrowly missed her second consecutive double-double with 31 assists and nine digs.
The Scots handled Brevard easily in the final set. After leading just 6-5 early, Maryville scored 11 points in a row and finished the match on a 19-6 run.
The Scots were unable to take the second match of the day against Meredith, falling in four sets with a 25-17, 25-22, 18-25 and 26-24 score line.
Maryville matched the Avenging Angels with 45 kills apiece, attacking at .212 compared to Meredith's .211.
Frisch and Ami Ingalls paced the Scots on offense, both finishing with 11 kills. Ingalls also posted 10 digs, marking her second double-double of the season.
Maryville fought hard in the fourth set, scoring the first five points of the set and holding the lead until Meredith tied it 14-14. From there, the match saw six ties and seven lead changes before the Avenging Angels won three in a row at the end to finish off the Scots.
The Scots are back in action Saturday for Day 2 of the Meredith/William Peace Tournament. The Scots take on Pfeiffer at 10 a.m. and the host William Peace at noon.
