MARYVILLE – Maryville hit the courts for the first time in 2022-23 and dropped a competitive 7-1 home decision to Emory & Henry. Six sets went to tiebreakers, with the Wasps winning four of those.

Sam Cocchia played into a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles before falling 8-7 (10-8).

Cooper Newman both dropped 8-1 decisions in their doubles matches.
In singles, Meyer won a hard-fought victory over Emory & Henry's Tristen Hicks by a 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 1-0 count. Crane and Burke lost in straights but did take their second sets to tiebreakers. Shaver fell at No. 1 singles, Cocchia lost at No. 4 and Newman at No. 6 was leading 7-6 (7-5) 5-5 but did not finish.
"It was great to see many of our freshmen get their first college experience in what was a pretty loud environment down on the courts," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "Many of them rose to the challenge of playing a team a level higher than us.
"There is a lot to learn with our young team, but we left the match encouraged about our overall performance."
