MARYVILLE – Maryville dropped back into a tie for second place in the Collegiate Conference of the South standings after the Scots fell 3-0 to Berea here Tuesday night.
The Scots played at home for the first time in 24 days, but this result was just like the last one when Piedmont knocked off MC 3-0 back on Sept. 23. In both instances against Berea and Piedmont, Maryville has won the road match and lost to those teams at home.
The scores finished 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16. The first set was super competitive, but Maryville never had a lead in Sets 2 and 3 in falling to 13-11 overall and 8-3 in the CCS. Piedmont also stands at 8-3.
Maryville in Set 1 led by two points on three occasions, the last 8-6. Berea put four straight on the board to go in front 10-8, but Maryville answered with three in a row thanks to two kills from
Cailin Mastropasqua and one from
Addie Smith for an 11-10 lead.
Caitlyn O'Shield's kill made it 13-13, and an
Ally Sokolow service ace knotted the score at 21-21 for the 10th tie of the set. But Berea closed on a 4-2 run to take the first set and establish the tone for the evening.
Rallies Fall Short
In Set 2, Berea built leads of 8-3 and 18-11 before the Scots rallied behind the serving of Sokolow. The sophomore served Maryville to a 7-0 run that tied the score first at 18-18 and then at 19-all. But Berea once again managed its game better down the stretch and pulled away for a 25-21 victory.
There were ties in Set 3 at 1-1, 2-2 and 7-7, but those were the high-water marks for Maryville. The Scots hit at just .031 for the set, finishing the match at .151 to Berea's .190. To wrap up the match, Berea closed with five consecutive points to capture its third straight victory. Berea improved to 12-10 overall and 8-4 in the CCS.
