Maryville Drops Match to Covenant

Scots Away for Final CCS Tri-Match Saturday

MARYVILLE – Hannah Haerer and Emma Kalbfleisch combined for 27 kills over three sets to lead Covenant to a 3-0 victory against Maryville here Tuesday night.
 
Covenant won by the scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-18.
 
Haerer attacked at a .591 clip with 14 kills and Kalbfleisch was close behind at .458 and 13 kills. The visitors held a 47-27 advantage in kills and Covenant attacked at a .352 percentage to Maryville's .095.
 
Maryville scored the first five points of Set 1, only to have Covenant answer with a 9-0 run. A 5-0 Covenant run made it 17-8 and the lead was never challenged.
 
Set 2 began as the most competitive, with eight ties and two lead changes. But Covenant took the lead for keeps at 12-11. Kenzie Brewster joined Addie Smith and Cailin Mastropasqua with three kills apiece in the set, but it wasn't enough.
 
Maryville led by as much as 10-6 in the third set before Covenant scored six in a row to take the lead. The homestanding Scots tied it 14-14 before Covenant pulled away for its 19th consecutive victory.
 
Sokolow Tops 400 Digs for Season
Maryville got eight kills and a .500 attack percentage from Reese Bailey, is up to fourth in the Collegiate Conference of the South in hitting percentage at .274. Ally Sokolow posted 11 digs to raise her season total to 410, which is the most by a Maryville Scot in at least 10 years. Mastropasqua finished with eight kills and Dakota Vaiese had 13 assists, with Ella Reyes adding 11 assists.
 
Covenant with the win improved to 25-1 overall and 14-0 in the CCS. The Lookout Mountain Scots already have clinched the CCS regular season crown.
 
Maryville is now 14-13 overall and 9-5 in fourth place in the CCS. The Scots are at LaGrange this Saturday for a tri-match that includes Agnes Scott. Start time is noon.
