LaGRANGE, Ga. – Maryville closed out its 2023 Collegiate Conference of the South regular season with a tri-match sweep at LaGrange.
The Scots took care of the host Panthers and then handled Agnes Scott. Both matches were decided by 3-0 score lines. Maryville defeated LaGrange 25-11. 25-16 and 27-25. Against Agnes Scott, the scores were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-18.
"We played excellent volleyball," Maryville interim head coach
Brienna Laskowski said. "It was the cleanest we've played in weeks, and that was despite being down two starters."
The Scots got off to a fast start in the first set against LaGrange, going up 9-3 fast. Maryville seemed to have all the answers on their way to winning 25-11. The Panthers kept in close in the second match, tying it a 9-9 before the Scots pulled away and won 25-16.
The third set was very similar to the second. The Panthers kept the match close and took a 13-12 lead. LaGrange kept fighting and trading points with the visiting Scots, and the 21-18 Panther lead forced a Maryville timeout to try to stop the LC run. But Maryville was able to kick it into another gear and take the 27-25 win.
Cailin Mastropasqua was the star against LaGrange. The sophomore posted a .737 attack percentage, finishing with 15 kills and one error in 19 total attacks.
Addie Smith was right behind at .667 on eight kills and zero errors on 12 total attacks.
"Cailin was outstanding for us today," Laskowski said. "She played really well."
Ally Sokolow pitched in with 15 digs and
Dakota Vaiese posted 25 assists.
In the second match, Maryville owned the first two sets as both were tied 1-1 and then no more, resulting in easy Scot victories. In the third set, Agnes Scott forced five ties and three lead changes. The last tie came at 13-13 before Maryville won three straight points on a pair of Smith kills and a
Hannah Kammer service ace.
The Scotties pulled within 16-15 but Maryville was too tough.
Kenzie Brewster's kill sparked a closing run for the Scots, who added kills down the stretch from
Reese Bailey,
Kayli Altom and finally
Ella Reyes to finish it at 25-18.
Smith led all players with 12 kills in the second match, attacking at a .421 clip. Bailey added six kills and a .857 hitting percentage. Reyes and Vaiese posted 12 assists apiece and Sokolow added another 10 digs.
Maryville with the victories ends its CCS schedule at 11-5, forcing a three-way tie for second place alongside Piedmont and Huntingdon. Before CCS tournament play begins Nov. 7 at home sites, Maryville plays next weekend in Atlanta against Berry on Friday and then Rhodes and Washington & Lee on Saturday.
