ATLANTA – Maryville stepped up in class Friday and lost in straight sets to No. 11-ranked Berry.
The Vikings, 22-4, won the Southern Athletic Association regular season title with a perfect 14-0 record and last week knocked off Collegiate Conference of the South regular season champ Covenant 3-0. This match was the first of three the Scots are playing at Emory this weekend in advance of the upcoming CCS tournament.
Friday's scores were 25-16, 25-19 and 25-13
There were four ties early in the first set, the last coming at 4-4 before Berry scored the next 10 points. Maryville drew as close as 22-15 but the late flurry wasn't enough.
The second set was the closest of the bunch, with seven ties and three lead changes. The Scots led by as much as 14-10 until Berry fought back and drew level at 15-all. Tie scores followed at 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18, but then the Vikings pulled away with a 7-1 run to settle it.
Berry scored the first three points of the third set and stretched that lead to 7-3. Maryville scored the next two points but then the Vikings went on a 12-2 run for a 19-7 advantage. They coasted from there and closed out the match.
20 Digs for Sokolow
Hannah Kammer and
Addie Smith were the big hitters up front for Maryville. Kammer registered seven kills and led the team with a .190 attack percentage, while Smith posted a team-high eight kills and attacked at a .167 clip.
Ally Sokolow added another 20 digs to her season haul, with
Dakota Vaiese contributing 15 assists and eight digs.
Berry attacked at .273 to Maryville's .029. Blocks were 7-3 in favor of the Vikings.
The Scots, now 16-14, are back in action for two matches Saturday. Maryville takes on Rhodes at 12:15 p.m. and Washington & Lee at 2:30 p.m. No livestreaming is available, but live stats can be found
