Scots Surprise Brevard 6-3

Avenge 9-0 Loss from Last Season with Rousing Singles Play

MARYVILLE – Maryville turned the tables on a former conference foe here Saturday, coming from behind to defeat Brevard 6-3.

The Scots captured five of the six singles matches to steal this win away from their old USA South rivals.

It was basically the same Tornados lineup that blanked the Scots 9-0 last spring, so Maryville head coach Doug Corbett was beside himself with pride.

"That was a fantastic college tennis match!" Corbett said. "Despite no ad scoring, the match lasted five hours. It was highly competitive, having three matches that went the distance.

Maryville lost the doubles round 2-1, but it was the Scots No. 1 pairing of Jackson Meyer and Jonathan Crane who emerged with an 8-5 win that set the stage for the singles comeback.

"We went down 2-1 after doubles, but our No. 1 team of Jackson and JC gave us life going into singles," Corbett said. "I'm really proud of the guys for the mental toughness they showed in pressure situations."

'Program-Setting Type of Win'
Then in singles, Maryville won two of the three matches that went to three sets. Burke clinched the overall match when he won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Josh Fisher added the icing when he also won a three-setter, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (4), 6-4 for the sixth team point.

"This is a program-setting type of win," Corbett said. "Brevard this year had the same core of players who beat us 9-0 last season. Shout-out to Kaleb in particular for clinching the team match in a third set. I'm looking forward to learning and growing from this match."

Kyle Shaver was a 6-3, 6-0 love winner at No. 1 singles, and Sam Cocchia breezed at No. 2 by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Crane put the Scots in position with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 4.

Maryville is back in action Wednesday against Columbia (S.C.). Start time is 2 p.m.
