Scots Complete Wild Comeback Over Berry

Two Home Runs from Whiteaker Lead MC to Victory

MARYVILLE – After falling behind 9-0 early, Maryville went on to score 15 unanswered, including six in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Berry 15-9 on Tuesday at Scotland Yard.

The Scots finally took the lead in the seventh inning when catcher Ashton Whiteaker hammered the go-ahead three-run homer just over the left field fence. The Freshman from Carlsbad, New Mexico hit another home run in the eighth, finishing his day 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

The ball was flying out of Scotland Yard all day, with both teams combining to hit six home runs in the contest. Before Whiteaker's go-ahead shot in the seventh, Zach Graham hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth that brought it to within one. Hunter Thaxton picked up the final home run, extending MC's lead to 12-9, just two batters after Whiteaker put the Scots ahead.

Wesley Wade hit both long balls for the Vikings, going deep in the first and second innings to give Berry their early lead. Wade finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs, and two runs scored.

Chris Arbuthnot was the winning pitcher for the Scots. After entering the game with just two outs in the first inning, the senior pitched a Maryville season-high 8 1/3 innings. Although Arbuthnot gave up three runs in the second inning, he shoved seven scoreless innings from that point on, allowing the Scots to claw their way back and eventually take the lead.

Maryville scored runs in six of their eight trips to the plate. The Scots fought their way back, slowly at first, before their seventh-inning explosion put them over the top.

Max Bowers doubled home the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second, making it 9-2. In the third, it was an RBI single from Graham and a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Meredith to make it 9-4,

Gabe Lopez doubled home Bowers in the fifth inning, picking up his team-high 11th extra-base hit of the season. The Vikings were able to hold Maryville scoreless in the fifth, but the Scots kept the momentum with a three-run sixth inning, finally taking the lead in the bottom of the seventh.
