SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maryville scored six runs in the seventh inning on Tuesday to steal the mid-week matchup against Sewanee on the road, 11-7.
Zach Fritts had himself a day at the plate for Maryville in this matchup. The senior didn't get the start in the game, but when his number was called as a pinch hitter, he didn't let his team down. The Lenoir City product went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, driving in four runs and scoring another two of his own. His hits accounted for the Scots' only extra-base knocks of the day.
MC found itself down 5-1 after the Tigers scored two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, but they wouldn't be down for long, as the bats came alive in the seventh and the Scots took the lead.
The Scots picked up 12 hits on their way to victory, including four in that pivotal seventh inning that allowed MC to take the lead. Maryville had just three hits prior to the seventh and had scored just one run, on a
Zac Graham sacrifice fly.
Their tremendous seventh-inning comeback began with one out, as
Jimmy Meredith and
Marshall Smith each reached base on back-to-back errors by Sewanee.
Gabriel Lopez and Graham then put together back-to-back hits, each picking up an RBI as they drove in Meredith and Smith.
Christian Carlton walked to load the bases for a pinch-hitting Fritts, who swiftly sent a 1-0 pitch down the right field line for a bases-clearing two-bagger.
The damage didn't end there though, as
Hunter Thaxton singled through the left side, picking up an RBI as Fritts crossed the plate. The inning came to an end, but Maryville continued their offensive outburst through the end of the game. The Scots scored three more runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth. MC picked up nine of its 12 hits in its final three trips to the plate.
Carter Crow showed off his blazing speed and great instincts with a steal of home in the eighth inning.
Tommy Musuras got the start for Maryville. He pitched a season-high 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out a season-high 4 batters.
Jakob Kerr recorded his first win of the season, pitching 1 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two batters.
After an eight-game road trip, Maryville returns home for CCS action on Friday for the first of a three-game series against Covenant. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
