MARYVILLE – Maryville's offense continued to thrive on Tuesday, leading to an 8-4 victory over Roanoke at Scotland Yard.
The Scots outhit the Maroons 13-7 on their way to the win, including a team-high three apiece from
Will Hubbell and
Hunter Thaxton. The pair also tied for the team lead in RBIs with two while Hubbell led the squad with three runs scored.
Collin Dunworth and
Marshall Smith added two hits each to round out MC's multi-hit performers. Maryville has picked up 10 or more hits in each of their last five games and eight of their last nine. Hubbell leads the team during that stretch with 13 hits and a batting average of .382 (13-for-34).
Maryville jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after scoring two runs in the second inning and three in the third. Hubbell scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the second, and Thaxton quickly followed, crossing the plate on a groundout from Smith, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in just his second start of the season.
The Scots picked up three more in the next inning on a two-RBI double from Hubbell, who would score on a single up the middle from Thaxton just one batter later.
The Maroons were able to close the gap in the fifth inning on a three-run home run from Spencer Rhodes.
Maryville wasted no time getting those runs back though, putting up three more runs over the two innings to go up 8-3. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Thaxton and
Colin Dunworth singled home two runs.
In the sixth,
Gabriel Lopez went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Jimmy Meredith and then scored on a throwing error by the first baseman trying to nab him at third base.
Roanoke would score one more in the eighth inning on a solo home run from Jonny Wall to bring the score to 8-4.
Tommy Musuras got the start for Maryville, pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three batters. All three of the runs he gave up came on one swing, the homer off the bat of Rhodes.
Chris Arbuthnot picked up the win in the contest, pitching 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, giving up two hits and walking none while striking out four batters. Arbuthnot is now tied with
Nic Mirabella for the team lead in wins, with four.
