LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – In the last conference matchup before the CCS tournament, Maryville was swept by Covenant, 9-0 on Saturday.
Abby Diggs and
Eliza Cheshire played a solid game at No. 2 doubles before falling 8-6 in Maryville's most competitive doubles match.
Katelyn Cook and
Elizabeth Shwaiko also played a strong game on the No. 1 court, falling 8-4.
In singles play, Shwaiko was competitive on the No. 3 court, falling 6-4 and 6-3 to Covenant's Nicole Restrepo.
Despite the tough loss, Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett was proud of his team's performance.
"Covenant is a good team," Corbett said. "I think we played very well in doubles and had chances to win at 1 and 2. No. 1 doubles was even closer than the 8-4 score. At 2 doubles we outplayed them for much of the match but had a lapse for a couple of games in the middle of it. I think if we can win one or two of those doubles matches then there's much more pressure for them and momentum for us going into singles. We look forward to earning the opportunity to play them again in the conference semis!"
"I am so proud of the growth of this team over the course of the season," Corbett said. We have won a lot more in the back half, but that's not just due to strong competition early in the season. The improvement up and down the lineup in the last few months has been phenomenal! That's what's possible when you have a hard-working and coachable group of girls like we do."
Conference tournament play begins Thursday in Rome, Ga.
