Scots Fall to Covenant at CCS Women's Tennis Championship

MC Blanked 5-0 at the Rome Tennis Center

ROME, Ga. – The Maryville women's tennis season concluded Friday at the Rome Tennis Center as the Scots fell to No. 2 seed Covenant 5-0 in the semifinals of the CCS Women's Tennis Championship.

Covenant defeated Maryville in all three doubles matches before picking up a singles victory on the No. 1 court and winning by default at No. 6 as MC was playing with just five players.

"We got off to a good start at No. 1 doubles but they are a solid duo and won the close games to pull away from us," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "In singles Elizabeth showed that she deserves every bit the recognition of All-Conference!"

Elizabeth Shwaiko, who was named to the CCS All-Conference Second Team Friday, was sharp in her matchup on the No. 3 court before the contest was called as Covenant reached the necessary five wins. She took the first set from her opponent, 6-0, and was down 3-2 in the second set when the match concluded.

Corbett also had high praise for one of his seniors, who is a leader on the MC squad.

"I want to thank Eliza publicly for her amazing contributions on the court, but more importantly as a captain to our young core of girls. She was a great leader and teammate."

Maryville finished its season with a record of 8-11 and 5-2 CCS. This is a strong improvement on their 2022 season, where the Scots went 4-10 and 3-4 in conference play.

I am very thankful to have a group of girls that we can be proud of because they go about things the right way," Corbett said. "We look forward to building on the successful season we had this year"

No. 1 seed Piedmont and No. 2 Covenant face off Saturday at 2 p.m. to determine the champion first-ever CCS Women's Tennis Champion.
