LaGRANGE, Ga. – Strong pitching and timely hitting led Maryville to a 7-3 upset over No. 1 seed LaGrange on Day 2 of the CCS Championship Tournament.
Maryville scored two runs apiece in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take an early lead, before adding an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Kyle Timko got the start for Maryville, pitching three scoreless innings to begin the contest. The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, both unearned. LaGrange finally got to Timko for an earned run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from CCS Player of the Year Joe Ruth.
The first-year pitcher finished with six innings pitched, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
Gabriel Lopez and
Ashton Whiteaker led the Scots offensively with three hits apiece while
Colin Dunworth and
Max Bowers each added two hits. The Scots recorded 14 hits on the day, with eight of their nine starters recording at least one knock.
Maryville kicked off its scoring effort in the third inning with some crafty base running. After Dunworth reached first on a single and moved to second on a hit from Lopez, the first-year outfielder advanced to third base on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with one out.
Two batters later, Lopez stole second base and Dunworth took advantage of the throw down, stealing home and putting the Scots on the board. Lopez then came around to score on an RBI double from
Christian Carlton.
MC scored two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single from
Zac Graham and an RBI fielder's choice by Lopez.
In the fifth inning,
Will Hubbell reached base on a single, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, and then scored on a passed ball.
Hunter Thaxton then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Max Bowers.
After six strong innings from Timko,
Xavier Resto entered the game in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings. The freshman allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two batters. Resto earned his second save of the season in the contest.
Maryville returns to action Friday against the loser of the matchup between No. 3 seed Huntingdon or No. 4 Piedmont. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
