Strong Pitching Leads Scots to Victory over Belhaven

Maryville Allows Just Two Hits in 5-1 Victory

LaGRANGE, Ga. – Maryville pitchers allowed just two hits against No. 2 seed Belhaven on Saturday as the Scots took down the Blazers, 5-1 at Cleaveland Field.

With the victory, Maryville has eliminated Belhaven from CCS Championship contention.

MC used three pitchers to push past the Blazers. They combined to allow just 10 total base runners, giving up two hits, four walks, and four hit batters.

Second Team All-Conference pitcher Mitchell Grannan got the start for Maryville. He pitched four no-hit innings, walking one batter and hitting another to allow just two base runners through the first four innings.

Brandon Schlabach picked up the win for Maryville in his one-inning outing. He gave up the first hit of the game in the fifth inning, also walking two and hitting a batter. With just a one-run lead, the Scots found themselves in trouble in the fifth, as Belhaven worked the bases loaded. The trouble subsided though as Schlabach induced a fly ball to right field to get out of the inning unscathed.

Bryce Leonhardt entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched to the end, allowing one run (unearned) on just one hit, a walk and two hit batters while striking out three batters. His performance earned him a save, his first of the season.

Maryville's affinity for the long ball was apparent once again in this contest as the Scots hit two more today. They now have five in the tournament, two of which have come off the bat of catcher Ashton Whiteaker.

Whiteaker kicked off the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence, making it 1-0 early.

The score would remain there for three more innings, but in the sixth Gabriel Lopez would double the Scots lead with a home run of his own. Lopez finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

Gabriel Lopez

The Scots picked up 11 hits in the contest as eight of the nine starters picked up at least one knock.

Next to Lopez, the only Scot with multiple hits was Colin Dunworth. The outfielder went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.

Maryville returns to action Sunday for an early morning matchup against Piedmont. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
