WHEATON, Ill. – Maryville won a tight fifth set to cap a back-and-forth match against Illinois Tech to close out its stay at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational, hosted by Wheaton (Illinois).
The Scots prevailed 22-25, 25-20, 28-26, 19-25 and 16-14 to finish their pre-conference portion of the schedule at 5-7. Maryville dropped a 3-0 decision to Aurora on Friday night and lost earlier Saturday by the same score to Concordia Chicago.
"We are continuing to learn one another while making strides toward getting better," Maryville interim head coach
Brienna Laskowski said. "The tough competition we're seeing every weekend is teaching us discipline and resiliency on the court."
In the finale,
Landry Frisch,
Cailin Mastropasqua and
Addie Smith all had double-doubles for the Scots. Frisch posted 11 kills and 18 digs, Mastropasqua had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Smith added 14 kills and 17 assists. First-year
Ella Reyes capped a big weekend in Chicago with 34 assists.
Smith for her efforts was named to the All-Tournament Team.
There were 36 ties and 13 lead changes over the five sets against Illinois Tech, including seven ties and three lead changes in the fifth set alone.
Play was even that set until Maryville grabbed the first two-point lead on Frisch's kill for a 9-7 advantage. Another Frisch kill made it 10-8 and then Mastropasqua's kill put the Scots in front 11-9.
Ally Sokolow followed with a service ace for a 12-9 cushion, but IIT came back to knot the score at 14.
That's when the Scots got a kill from Bailey and then
Caitlyn O'Shield did the same to close out the Scarlet Hawks.
Smith in the first match against Concordia Chicago posted 10 kills and just missed a double-double with nine assists. The Scots were in each set but lost the match by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23. The Cougars are 4-5 after their stay at the Marilyn Scribner tourney.
Maryville opens CCS play next Saturday by hosting a tri-match. The Scots take on Belhaven at noon and face Piedmont at 4 p.m. Belhaven and Piedmont play at 2 p.m.
