MARYVILLE – Maryville fell to former USA South rival Brevard in a hard-fought match 2-1 Tuesday night.
Despite playing a man down for much of the second half, the Tornados were able to score two breakaway goals in the final 45 minutes and secure the victory.
The Scots' lone goal came in the 86th minute off the foot of first-year
Hayden Tate.
Craig McIlwraith picked up his team-high third assist of the season on the goal. For Tate, the goal marks the first of his collegiate career.
After a scoreless first half, Brevard wasted no time taking the lead in the second. Right after the break, In just the 46th minute, the Tornados Igor De Silva gained possession of a turnover on Maryville's side of the field and raced down the right flank where he booted the ball just past the outstretched hand of Scots goalkeeper
Mykal Manfred.
10-man Brevard added an insurance goal in the 69th minute from Ryan Lynch to put the Tornados ahead 2-0.
Tates scored in the 86th minute but by then it was too late for Maryville to complete the comeback. The Scots are now 3-3-3 on the season, having lost their first game since September 2, against Fontbonne. The Scots had been unbeaten for six games until Tuesday's Contest.
Brevard finished the match with a 15-7 shot advantage and was on target for five shots to Maryville's three.
The Scots begin Collegiate Conference of the South play on the road Saturday as they head to LaGrange for a 4 p.m. kick off.
