MARYVILLE – Maryville put on its goal-scoring shoes and booted LaGrange right back to Georgia with a 7-0 shellacking.
Madison McDonald scored her first career brace to lead the charge, converting twice from long range in a 2½-minute span to make it 3-0 in the first half. The first tally came in the 23rd minute after being set up by
Chloe Chase for a 25-yard strike into the upper right corner. McDonald scored again unassisted late in the 25th minute, this time grabbing a loose ball and scoring from nearly the same spot.
The Scots improved to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the CCS. Maryville is now 15-0-1 against LaGrange since 2011, and the Scots have won the last two matches in the series 4-0 and 7-0. The seven goals matched their season high set in a 7-1 victory against Meredith back on Sept. 8.
"It was a really good performance," Scots head coach
Pepe Fernandez said. "There were some good goals, we got the shutout and you just keep rolling through conference play getting as many points as you can.
"If you take care of your home field from this point on, you feel like you're in pretty good shape going into the playoffs. We've still got to go to Belhaven, but we've got Piedmont at home, which is nice."
Lee Scores Second of Week
Sierra Lee scored Maryville's first goal, her fourth of the season and 22nd of her career. The initial shot by
Hailey Cartt was saved, but Lee was on the spot to tap in the rebound in the ninth minute of play.
In the second half,
Avery Brown scored her first of the season in the 56th minute. A free kick from
Elle Fair found its way to Brown, who was all alone in the box for a 10-yard boot and a 4-0 lead.
Hannah Smoot made it 5-0 two minutes later with her team-leading fifth goal of the season and 11th of her young career. Anabelle Proctor dropped a pass back to Smoot, who fired from the left corner of the penalty area into the far-right netting.
Sadie Phelan tallied her first of the season in the 77th minute.
Katie Corley played a pass into the box toward goal and Phelan beat the defender to the ball and redirected it into the right corner of the goal.
Meghan Kimbirl also scored her first of the season, wrapping the scoring in the 86th minute. An initial shot by Corley was saved, but Kimbirl was on the spot for the easy one-timer from 6 yards out and a 7-0 finish.
"This group has a lot of depth," Fernandez said. "We've got some forwards who can come off the bench and score for us, we've got two good goalkeepers – shutout, get your win and go!"
Maryville outshot LaGrange 28-5, including a 17-2 edge in shots on target. The Scots attempted eight corner kicks to zero for the Panthers, and Maryville had a 62 percent to 38 percent advantage in ball possession.
Turner Earns Third Victory
Sophie Turner played the first 62½ minutes, making one save and improving her record to 3-0-3. Turner now has twice as many victories (22) as she does defeats (11) for her career, to go with nine draws.
Sydney Mahr made one save over her final 27-plus minutes. LaGrange goalkeeper Cassidy Abbott made 10 saves in the loss.
LaGrange falls to 3-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the CCS.
