MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett put his team between the lines for the first time Wednesday, and the Scots dropped an 8-1 decision to NAIA foe Freed-Hardeman out of West Tennessee.
First-year Scot
Alyssa Smith picked up her debut collegiate singles victory at the No. 5 position. Smith completed a hard-fought three-set match over Freed-Hardeman's Kennley Kirk by the scores of 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (13-11).
Maryville did not win another set in the match.
Elizabeth Shwaiko at No. 2 dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision, while
Mia Brown at No. 3 lost 6-1, 6-2 and
Abby Diggs at No. 4 fell 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles, Kaitlyn Cook and
Mandy Webb played a competitive match before going down by an 8-4 score line at the No. 3 position. Shwaiko and Brown teamed at No. 1 and Smith and Diggs played together at No. 2, with both Maryville pairings losing by 8-2 counts.
The Scots are back in action for their final match of the fall season, hosting local foe Johnson on Oct. 17 in women's and men's matches. Start time from the MC Courts is 3 p.m.
