MARYVILLE – It's three wins and then a pair of weekly awards for Maryville Volleyball.
The Collegiate Conference of the South named
Ally Sokolow its Defensive Player of the Week and
Addie Smith the Rookie of the Week after the Scots won three times in the Maryville College Labor Day Classic.
Sokolow led Maryville's defensive effort with a team-leading 81 digs, or 4.3 digs per set. The sophomore libero had double-figures in digs every match and posted a pair of double-doubles, with 10 assists each against Sewanee and Brevard. Her game-high for digs was 23 in the five-set comeback win against Methodist.
She also added 17 digs against Sewanee and 16 versus Brevard in the two four-set matches.
Smith began her collegiate career in a big way with four double-doubles and one triple-double over the five matches. The versatile setter/opposite hitter combined to average 2.2 kills, 4.5 assists and 3.2 digs per set.
She just missed a triple-double in her very first match Friday against Sewanee, posting nine kills, 14 assists and 21 digs over four sets. She came back in Friday's nightcap to record 10 kills, 24 assists and 14 digs as the Scots rallied back from a 2-0 start to defeat Methodist 3-2. She closed the weekend with three more double-doubles, adding 13 service aces and six blocks.
Maryville went 3-2, defeating Methodist, Spalding and Brevard. The team's only dropped matches came against unbeatens Sewanee and Hanover.
The Scots play Friday and Saturday at the Washington & Lee Invitational in Virginia.
