Maryville Clobbers Meredith 7-1

Lee Paces Six Different Goal Scorers; Scots Improve to 3-0-1

DEMOREST, Ga. – Maryville put its traveling shoes on and produced a convincing win over a former conference foe.

The Scots opened play in Piedmont's Bradford Classic on Friday with a resounding 7-1 victory over Meredith of the USA South. Six different Maryville players found the net, led by Sierra Lee with a pair of headers. The junior forward now has an even 20 goals for her career.

Just one night after playing Transylvania to a scoreless draw in Kentucky, Maryville hopped on another bus Friday morning and made the drive into northern Georgia. The back-to-backs didn't seem to cause any ill effects.

"It was a great team performance after playing last night in Kentucky and then turning right around and playing here in Georgia today," Scots associate head coach John Baker said. "It was great to see everyone contribute, and for Katie Cotten and Katie Corley to score their first collegiate goals."

Maryville tallied first in the fourth minute when Hannah Smoot with her lethal left foot fired a low centering pass that found the toe of Katie O'Brien, who redirected it easily past the Meredith goalkeeper.

The Scots made it 2-0 in the 25th minute when Smoot took a corner kick played short and curled a left-footed shot into the far side netting from about 25 yards out.

Goal No. 3 happened from a sudden midfield fast break in the 29th minute. Lee found Chloe Chase racing forward, and Chase blistered one on the run from about 15 yards out into the left lower corner.

Late in the first half, Maryville made it 4-0 on a nifty setup. Cotten dribbled into the box and fired a shot hard against the right post. The ball caromed back her way and Cotton lofted a pass over the Meredith defenders and goalkeeper onto the waiting head of Lee, who didn't miss from the doorstep.

More of Same in Second Half
The Scots scored their fifth goal in the 65th minute. The play began with a corner kick taken by Delaney Muldoon. She played the ball back to Alex Smith, who lofted a perfect pass to a waiting Lee in the box. Lee again didn't miss on her header from 8 yards out, and Maryville was in front 5-0.

Cotten scored Maryville's sixth goal and the first of her career in the 74th minute. Corley gained control of a loose ball near midfield and spotted Cotten, who turned and suddenly found an open lane toward the goal. She dribbled with her right foot before reaching the box and crossing over, and she fired left-footed low and hard past the Avenging Angels keeper.

Corley scored her own first collegiate goal in the 86th minute. Maryville's pressure defense caused a turnover in plus territory and Corley jumped on the loose ball. She dribbled toward the left portion of the box before firing back toward the right and beating the keeper on the far side.

Meredith's lone tally came with just two seconds left and snapped a Scots defensive scoreless streak of 339 minutes and 17 seconds.

Maryville improved to 3-0-1, while Meredith is now 0-1-2. The Scots have outscored their four opponents 14-2.

The Scots are in action again Sunday against ODAC opponent Guilford, which is 2-0-0 heading into Saturday's match at Emory. Kickoff Sunday on the Piedmont pitch is 3:30 p.m.
