LaGRANGE, Ga. – Hannah Smoot found her scoring touch in a big way Saturday to help Maryville breeze to a 5-0 victory at LaGrange.
The Scots already were in control by two goals when Smoot struck for a natural hat trick in a 1:25 span early in the second half. Officially, she scored twice in the 52nd minute and then completed her three-goal outburst with another goal in the 53rd minute.
In that short time, Smoot lifted her season goal total from four to seven. She now is tied for third in the Collegiate Conference of the South and just two behind teammate
Sierra Lee.
Anabelle Procter and Lee scored first-half goals to put the Scots in front. Procter scored her first of the season in the fourth minute and then Lee scored her ninth in the 37th minute. Lee and LaGrange's Kaia King are tied for the CCS lead in goals scored.
All five Maryville goals were assisted.
Avery Brown had the first one, followed by
Delaney Muldoon, Procter and then the last two by
Erin Hudson
13-0 Sweep Through Georgia
Saturday's clean sheet for
Sydney Mahr in goal and the Maryville defense completed a perfect 180 minutes for the Scots on this Georgia road trip. MC took care of Agnes Scott 8-0 on Thursday.
"It was nice to get a pair of shutouts on the trip as the defense locked things down in the back," Maryville associate head coach
Jon Baker said. "It was also great to get playing time for everyone over both games."
Mahr made two saves as the Scots outshot the home side 22-2. Sixteen of Maryville's shots were on target, with LaGrange goalkeeper Anna Wright making 11 saves. Corner kicks also favored Maryville by a 7-0 count.
The Scots improved to 8-1-4 overall and 5-0-0 in the CCS. Piedmont is 4-0-0 in the league, followed by Covenant at 4-1-0, Belhaven at 4-2-0 and Asbury at 2-1-1. LaGrange is now 4-7-3 and 1-4-0.
