MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A pair of first-year Scots stepped forward at the perfect time to help Maryville secure a 2-1 victory at Huntingdon on Saturday. The win lifted MC to a three-point week and into fourth place in the Collegiate Conference of the South standings.
The win completed a 3-0 Saturday sweep for Maryville over teams from Huntingdon, joining victories earlier in the day in football and women's soccer.
A scoreless tie suddenly went frantic after the hour mark.
Jacob Knight scored his first collegiate goal in the 61st minute. After Huntingdon drew level in the 64th minute,
Ethan Denney scored his second of the year in the 69th minute to push Maryville back into the lead.
Maryville worked for a 12-7 lead in shots, paced by
Brady Hammer with five shots on goal. Denny attempted two shots and Knight scored on his only shooting try.
Scots Up to Fourth Place
Christian Alcaraz went the distance at goalkeeper, making two saves. The junior is now 5-6-2 on the season with a 1.33 goals-against average and .782 saves percentage.
Maryville finished with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Scots improved to 5-8-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCS, good for fourth place. Huntingdon dropped to 3-9-1 and 0-5-0. The Hawks were eliminated from contention for the CCS Tournament.
Maryville closes its regular season Friday afternoon at Piedmont, which is 7-6-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference. The Lions host first-place Covenant on Tuesday night.
