The toughest challenge for the Scots came in the first set against Wesleyan. The match saw three early ties before the Wolves took a 4-3 lead. Maryville kept fighting, regaining the lead at 11-10 and again at 16-15 during a 6-0 run, highlighted by two service aces from Dakota Vaiese. Maryville then turned its attention to Huntingdon, securing their first 3-0 win against the Hawks since 2021.
"We've talked a lot about playing clean and disciplined in practice," Scots head coach Brienna Laskowski said. "Our staff pushed the girls hard this week in practice, and in turn, they played focused and with a ton of confidence."
Junior Cailin Mastropasqua was dominant against Huntingdon, leading the Scots with 13 kills while adding six digs and three blocks to cap off a standout performance.
"Cailin is a machine," Laskowski said. "She does so much for us physically, but she's also a floor general. She's the reason our defense and serve receive are always on same page. Plus, she's got a hammer of an arm, which is a nice bonus."
Reese Bailey was also impactful for the Scots, delivering two key aces and five kills in the second set to help Maryville grind out the 25-22 victory. Katelyn Eldred added five aces of her own in the set, leading the Scots with five for the match.
The third set proved to be the most competitive, with four early ties. MC broke away after the 4-4 mark, building momentum and finishing with a 25-17 win to secure the sweep.
Maryville improved its record to 11-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Scots return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Asbury (10-4, 5-0) in what is shaping up to be a thriller.
