ATLANTA – Maryville competed but came up empty in a Friday afternoon match against Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets prevailed 3-0 on Day 1 of the Emory Classic.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-19 and 25-21.
Randolph-Macon controlled play throughout much of the first two sets, but the third set was fun to watch. There were 15 ties and eight lead changes as the two teams recorded their best attack percentage of the match.
Maryville attacked at a .258 rate in Set 3, and Randolph-Macon posted a .433 attack percentage in closing out the match.
Tie Scores from 1-1 to 11-11
The set opened with tie scores all the way from 1-1 to 11-11. Randolph-Macon earned a two-point lead for the first time at 13-11, only to have Maryville re-take the lead 16-15 on back-to-back service aces from
Landry Frisch. The Yellow Jackets scored four points in a row, but
Dakota Vaiese's service ace and
Cailin Mastropasqua's kill made it 21-20 Scots.
But that was a far as it went. Randolph-Macon scored the game's final five points to close out the match and improve to 12-12 on the season. Maryville dropped to 21-9.
Mastropasqua was the Maryville leader in kills with 12 and digs with nine, just missing a double-double. Frisch added 11 kills against zero errors on 20 total attacks, giving her a .550 attack rate for the match. Vaiese pitched in 14 assists and
Ella Reyes had eight.
Kenzie Brewster had one block solo and one block assist.
The Scots on Saturday take on No. 14-ranked Washington & Lee (26-2) at 12:30 p.m. and host and No. 5-ranked Emory (21-1) at 2:30 p.m. Video is available only for the Emory match.
