MARYVILLE – Brandon Schlabach entered the game as a reliever in the fifth inning and pitched 4 1/3 innings to lead Maryville to a 7-3 victory over Roanoke Tuesday afternoon here at Scotland Yard.
The righty earned his first win of the season, relieving starting pitcher
Tommy Musuras and holding the Maroons scoreless to finish out the game. Schlabach allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out three batters.
With the win, Maryville secured the series victory over Roanoke, taking three of the four games the two squads have played this season.
Both teams scored in the first inning, using small-ball strategy early to get on the board. Roanoke used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to score their run while MC also brought in a runner with a sac bunt from
Jimmy Meredith.
The score remained tied until the fourth inning when Roanoke's Hayden Giordano and Hunter von Zelowitz both hit solo home runs to put the Maroons ahead 3-1.
The Scots didn't take long to come back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Jacob Johnston picked up an RBI on a ground out to kick off the innings scoring, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Meredith to tie up the game. Meredith also scored the winning run, coming around to score on an error.
MC scored three more runs in the sixth, with
Hunter Thaxton scoring on a passed ball, and Meredith coming through with a two-RBI single to put the Scots up 7-3.
Meredith finished the contest 2-for-3 with a season-high four RBIs and a run scored. The Cape Coral native extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He's recorded multiple hits in five straight and seven of his last 11.
