Maryville Takes Down Johnson 4-3

Diggs Grabs Clinching Point; Brown Wins Fourth Straight

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville swept the doubles matches and carried that momentum into singles to secure a 4-3 victory at Johnson on Wednesday afternoon.

The Scots earned one point by winning all three doubles matches – NAIA rules count the doubles results as one point in the match, unlike the three points credited by NCAA Division III rules.

Mia Brown and Mandy Webb grabbed the first doubles set with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position, followed by Abby Diggs and Alyssa Smith winning 6-3 at No. 2. Katelyn Cook and Elizabeth Shwaiko at the top spot then posted their own 6-3 triumph to complete the sweep and hand Maryville a 1-0 lead.

Doubles Pairings Panning Out
These doubles pairings for Maryville are working out quite well. Cook and Shwaiko improved to 3-0 for the season, Diggs and Smith are now 6-1, and Brown and Webb bumped their record to 2-0.

After Shwaiko dropped her No. 1 singles match, Cook put the Scots back on track with her third singles victory in a row, a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Brown followed by winning in a third-set tiebreaker 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6), and Maryville was in front 3-1 heading to the final three matches.

For Brown, it was her fourth singles victory in a row and improved her season record to a team-leading 9-5. Cook has won three straight in singles and stands 7-7 for the season.

Diggs provided the clinching point at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, improving her season record to 6-7. Smith and Webb both dropped their matches, with Smith losing 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker to snap a four-match winning streak. She stands at 8-6 in singles for the season.

The Scots improved to 6-5 overall, while Johnson dropped to 1-10. Maryville is home Saturday against Agnes Scott in a Collegiate Conference of the South encounter starting at 2 p.m. The Scots are 1-0 in league play.
