Scots Drop Pitcher's Duel Against Oberlin

Maryville Splits Two-Game Series With the Yeomen

MARYVILLE – An old-fashioned Pitchers' duel at Scotland Yard led to a midweek series split, as Maryville fell to Oberlin 2-0 Thursday afternoon.

The Scots' offense was unable to break through for any runs against Yeomen starting pitcher Calvin Burkholder, who pitched a complete game shutout, scattering eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

Despite the loss, Maryville's three pitchers combined to allow six hits and four walks while striking out 11 batters. As a staff, that strikeout number marks their third most this season, and their most since March 15, against Asbury (13).

Nic Mirabella got the start for MC in the contest, pitching a game-high 4 1/3 innings while allowing one run on three hits and a walk. The righty struck out three batters in the contest.

Mirabella was unfortunately saddled with the loss for Maryville. After exiting the game with runners on the corners and one out in the fifth inning, a single from Harry Kaplan brought home the first run of the game. That run would also prove to be the winning run in the low-scoring affair.

Kyle Timko pitched 2 2/3 innings for the Scots, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits and a walk. While striking out four.

The Yeomen's second run of the game came in the sixth inning. Oberlin led off the inning with a single from David Curtain, who promptly moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A groundout moved him to third where he scored on a wild pitch just one batter later.

Mitchell Grannan was the third and final pitcher of the game. He threw two innings of scoreless and hitless baseball, while walking two and striking out four batters.

AJ Finco recorded the only multi-hit effort for the Scots, going 2-for-4 in the contest.

The Scots have the weekend off before returning to action Tuesday for a midweek matchup against Asbury at Scotland Yard. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
