COLUMBIA, S.C. – A short-handed Maryville squad dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to NAIA opponent Columbia College on Friday Afternoon.
Elizabeth Shwaiko couldn't play for the Scots in this one and, despite Maryville winning two matches by forfeit, the host Koalas proved just a little too challenging.
Abby Diggs and
Alyssa Smith earned a 6-3 win for Maryville at No. 2 doubles. Coupled with a forfeit win at No. 3, the Scots took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. This match was played by NAIA rules, with the three doubles matches combining to account for one point.
Columbia College took control of the match by winning four of the five singles matches that were played. Smith scored a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 singles, and Diggs dropped a heartbreaker at the No. 3 position. She won the first set 7-6 (8-6) but then lost 6-2, 6-3.
"Tough loss after having a 3-2 lead," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "We were not at full strength today without Elizabeth, but we will bounce back.
"Excited to get down to Hilton Head to play some more competitive matches and have a great time as a team."
As the Coach says, Maryville is headed to Hilton Head for its Spring Break Tennis Fest schedule of matches. The Scots take on Cornell College on Sunday at 3 p.m., Webster on Monday at 11 a.m., and St. Mary's (Maryland) on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
