Strong Pitching Leads MC to Sweep of Berea

Maryville Arms Strikeout 13 in Game 3 Victory Over Mountaineers

MARYVILLE – Strong pitching and early offense secured a second-straight weekend sweep for Maryville as the Scots picked up a 5-2 win over Berea Sunday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

Maryville (16-11, 7-1 CCS) has won seven games in a row and nine of their last ten. They sit atop the CCS standings, just ahead of Piedmont (19-11, 7-2 CCS).

Maryville picked up two run-rule victories against the Mountaineers (5-24, 0-12 CCS) on Saturday afternoon, and it looked like it was going to be the same today, as the Scots picked up five runs in the first two innings.

Unlike in Friday's games, Berea's pitching staff was able to stabilize on Saturday, holding MC scoreless over the final six frames.

While Maryville's offense slowed somewhat, the Scots pitching staff continued its domination of the Mountaineers offense, picking up 13 strikeouts in Game 3.

Kyle Timko led the way on the mound for MC pitching six innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits while striking out a career-high eight batters. The southpaw picked up his first win of the season in the contest, improving to 1-2 on the season.

Xavier Resto continued his commanding sophomore season, pitching three no-hit innings in relief allowing no runs while striking out five batters. He faced just one batter over the minimum in his three frames, walking a batter with two outs in the seventh inning. He picked up his team-high third save of the season, tied for second in the CCS.

After four runs came across in the first inning, Max Bowers rocketed a ball over the left-field fence in the second inning for his first home run of the season, and his first since May 3, 2023, in the CCS Tournament play-in game, also against Berea.

Ashton Whiteaker recorded the lone multi-hit performance for the Scots, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Whitaker has now hit safely in nine straight games, the longest current streak on the squad. The catcher raised his batting average over .300 for the first time this season, batting .304 (31-for-102).

Jacob Johnston, Jimmy Meredith, Colin Dunworth, Bowers, and Daniel Montana all picked up one hit each in the contest.

Montana has now reached base safely in 10 consecutive games, the longest on-base streak on the team. During that 10-game stretch, he is batting .576 (19-for-33). On the season he is slashing .487/.522/.615.

Maryville is back in action Friday afternoon when it travels to Lookout Mountain, Georgia for the battle of the Scots in a CCS matchup against Covenant. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
