CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Third-seeded Maryville took advantage of a depleted Belhaven roster and rolled to a 5-0 shutout in the opening round of the 2024 Collegiate Conference of the South Women's Tennis Tournament.
The Scots with the victory improved to 12-8 for the program's most wins in at least 20 years. The won-lost percentage is the best since the 2013 squad finished 10-5 (.667).
Maryville won both doubles matches that were contested and received a forfeit victory at No. 3. The Blazers had just five team members on site at the Chattanooga Champions Club.
Katelyn Cook and
Elizabeth Shwaiko teamed to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, with
Abby Diggs and
Alyssa Smith prevailing 8-1 at the No. 2 position for a 3-0 Scots advantage heading to singles.
One-Sided in Singles
Once again in singles, the Scots were awarded a forfeit victory at No. 6 when the Blazers could not field the position. Cook then was the first to finish off her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 wipeout that clinched the match for Maryville.
Other matches in progress had
Mia Brown at No. 1 leading 6-1, 2-1; Shwaiko at No. 2 in front 6-2, 1-1; Diggs at No. 4 in the lead by a 6-1, 1-0 score; and
Josie McRae at No. 5 winning her first set 6-0.
Mandy Webb did not play at No. 6 because of the forfeit.
The Scots take on second-seeded Covenant (10-8) on Friday at 10 a.m. Covenant won 8-1 at Maryville last Friday in the regular season finale.
