Maryville Falls to Piedmont 8-7 on Senior Day

Scots Now Looking Ahead to CCS Tournament

MARYVILLE – Maryville dropped its final game of the regular season on Saturday, falling to Piedmont 8-7 here at Scotland Yard.

Before the game, the Scots celebrated Senior Day, honoring their 14 senior student-athletes and recognizing their hard work and dedication to the Maryville baseball program.

Maryville took an early 4-0 lead in the second inning before extending it to 6-0 with two more in the fifth.

Max Bowers and Carter Crow kicked off the scoring, driving in two runs each in the bottom of the fourth while AJ Finco batted in two more with a base-loaded single to make it 6-0.

AJ Finco

Piedmont battled to score one in the seventh before exploding for a seven-run inning in the eighth to take an 8-6 lead.

The Scots got one back in the eighth on a groundout from Crow but were unable to complete the comeback, ultimately falling to the Lions 8-7.

Crow, making his first start of the season and just the second of his career, made the most of his opportunity, reaching base twice while driving in a team-high 3 runs.

Jimmy Meredith and Bowers led the Scots with two hits apiece. Both scored one run, while Bowers recorded the only extra-base hit of the game for the Scots. The center fielder reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk while driving in two runs.

Max Bowers

Bowers has picked up two or more knocks in four of his last five games, going 9-for-20 (.450) with three RBIs and six runs scored during that stretch.

The Scots used six arms against the Lions on Saturday, all of which were seniors who were celebrated during the pregame festivities. Grady Cash made the second start of his career, pitching three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit while walking four and striking out three batters.

Bryce Einstein, Garrett Gleason, Tommy Musuras, Michael Holmes, and Brandon Schlabach all pitched innings out of the bullpen, combining to allow six hits over the final six innings of play.

Einstein and Schlabach pitched two innings each. Einstein allowed one hit and no runs while striking out one while Schlabach allowed one run on three hits while striking out two.

Garrett Gleason

Gleason pitched a three up, three down inning in the sixth, striking out one batter while throwing just eight pitches. Musuras followed in the seventh with a strong inning of his own, allowing one run (unearned) on one hit while walking one batter.

The 2024 regular season has ended and now as the No. 1 seed in the CCS, The Scots will prepare to host the conference tournament here at Scotland Yard Wednesday, May 8, through Saturday, May 11.

Unofficially, Maryville will face off against No. 6 seed Covenant at 3 p.m. on Wednesday Afternoon.
