ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Maryville made quick work of Warren Wilson, and then turned around to outlast Pfeiffer in a five-set classic. The Scots now sit at 4-4 on the season.
Maryville got off to a hot start against Warren Wilson with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a service ace from libero
Katelyn Eldred. The Scots maintained their lead throughout the first set, cruising to a 25-14 victory.
The second set was more of the same, with
Dakota Vaiese starting things off with an ace of her own. Once again, the Scots never relinquished the lead and secured a 25-18 win.
The third set was more competitive, with the Owls clawing back to take the lead following a Maryville attack error. The Scots managed to force four ties before regaining the lead for good and winning 25-14.
Frisch, Vaiese lead the way
Landry Frisch led the team with 17 kills against Pfeiffer, attacking at a solid .265 clip. Sophomore Vaiese also played a crucial role, delivering a trio of back-to-back aces in the critical second set and pushing the Scots to a 4-0 lead on the way to a 25-23 victory. Vaiese earlier contributed an ace in the first set.
Rookie
Katelyn Eldred had a solid day, contributing three aces and 20 digs against the Falcons.
Brooke Oliver continued her strong start with 13 kills in the second match, finishing second in team kills for the Pfeiffer contest.
Megan Fairburn contributed 19 assists with a .302 setting percentage.
"Kate, Meg and Brooke were all key pieces of really good wins," Maryville head coach
Brienna Laskowski said. "All three were steady and reliable when the game got tight. Meg's distribution and decision-making were impressive. She created a lot of one-on-one scenarios for our athletes, and Brooke was there to terminate every time. Kate plays with such urgency and consistency, and that created a lot of opportunities for our offense to fire away."
Maryville is back in action Tuesday, playing at Berea in a 6 p.m. midweek showdown.
