BEREA, Ky. – Berea was just a bit tougher Tuesday night. In a hard-fought contest, Maryville fell to the Mountaineers 3-0. This marks the third time since 2022 that the Scots have lost to a Berea squad by that score. Overall, the Scots are 13-3 against their former CCS foes.
Maryville entered Tuesday's matchup on the heels of a strong showing at the Warren Wilson Invitational, looking to climb above .500 with a win against Berea. However, the Mountaineers tenacity and Maryville's costly errors proved to be the deciding factors in the match.
While the Scots closely matched the Mountaineers in kills, with 35 to Berea's 38, errors were the story of the night. Maryville committed 35 errors, including nine service errors and 20 attack errors, compared to Berea's 27. These mistakes disrupted the Scots momentum, allowing Berea to make the most of its opportunities.
The third set was the highlight for the Scots, as sophomore Dakota Vaiese showcased her serving prowess. Vaiese led Maryville on a 6-0 run, forcing Berea to call a timeout. The sophomore contributed two aces during that stretch, giving the Scots a 16-14 lead — their first of the set. Despite this momentum, Maryville ultimately fell short, closing the frame with a 25-22 loss. The first two sets were also competitive, ending with scores of 25-22 and 25-19. For the match, Vaiese tallied 15 assists, two aces, and 10 digs.
Bailey Shines in Loss
Reese Bailey stood out in the contest, posting an impressive .500 attack percentage. She recorded eight kills on 14 attempts, adding an ace, two solo blocks, four block assists, and three digs to her solid performance.
Cailin Mastropasqua led the Scots in kills with 10, five of which came in the first set. She also contributed 10 digs, showcasing her all-around play. Bailey and Landry Frisch tied for second on the kill leaderboard, each contributing eight kills.
The Scots look to rebound this weekend at the Huntingdon Invitational, where they face Oglethorpe at noon Central time and future SAA foe Sewanee at 2 p.m.
