MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Maryville picked up two big wins Saturday against Southern Athletic Association opponents Oglethorpe and Sewanee. The team won a hard-fought match 3-2 versus Oglethorpe before sweeping past Sewanee 3-0 in the second match.
Set scores were 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 25-14, and 15-9 against Oglethorpe, and then 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23 over the Sewanee Tigers.
Reese Bailey stood out as the kill leader versus Oglethorpe. She posted 16 kills, three blocks, and four digs. Bailey also had three service aces, tying
Dakota Vaiese for the team lead. The Scots totaled 11 service aces in the first match.
Brewster Returns
The weekend marked senior captain
Kenzie Brewster's return after missing the previous nine games with an injury. Brewster had six kills against Sewanee, with a .333 hitting percentage.
"Brew is like the missing piece of the puzzle," Scots head coach
Brienna Laskowski said. "She's our captain and leader for a reason. She brings passion, experience, and a win-at-all-cost mindset that undoubtedly pushes us to play better volleyball.
"It obviously feels good to handle business this weekend. Our goal right now is to keep getting better with each opportunity given. We don't need to be physically perfect right now, but we need perfect effort and focus so that we are ready to go come mid-November."
Katelyn Eldred also sparkled versus Sewanee, contributing four aces to help the Scots with the sweep. Two of Eldred's aces came in the first set. The Scots went on a 6-0 run, distancing themselves from the Tigers en route to a 25-15 decision. Eldred also had seven digs on the day.
Maryville returns to action Wednesday for a home matchup and Collegiate Conference of the South opener against rival Covenant. Start time is 6:30 p.m.
