Streak Halted!

MC snaps Covenant’s Conference Run With 3-1 Victory.

MARYVILLE — In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Cooper Athletic Center, Maryville flipped the switch, snapping Covenant's 24-match conference win streak in a four-set thriller.

Covenant entered Wednesday's match having won 35 out of its last 37 conference games. Those 35 wins were sandwiched between two Maryville Scot victories — this one and Oct. 25, 2022.

All four sets were tightly contested, with scores of 26-24, 25-22, 17-25, and 25-16. MC's lone setback came in a hard-fought third set, where the Scots found themselves down 12-3 before a timeout.

"We just needed one point to break the rotation, then we could chip away, one point at a time," Scots head coach Brienna Laskowski said. "The focus wasn't on closing the gap all at once, but on taking it step by step." Maryville responded by outscoring Covenant 14-13 to close the set.

That momentum carried into the fourth, with Laskowski reinforcing her message.

"Well, after the second timeout at 3-12, we bounced back and outscored them 14-13," Laskowski said. "That was the message: as long as we don't spot them nine, we will outscore them. They built great momentum toward the end of the third, so we just rode it through the fourth!"

The fourth set featured just two lead changes. As the Scots got off to a hot start thanks to libero Katelyn Eldred, who delivered two key service aces. MC pushed the score to 12-11 before Covenant briefly took a one-point lead, but Maryville quickly regained control at 14-13. From there, it was all Maryville, with Reese Bailey sealing the deal by delivering two clutch aces, as the team finished on a 13-3 run.

Sets 1 and 2 were both 50-50 affairs, with Maryville surging at the end of both. The first set alone featured 12 lead changes and six ties.

Landry Frisch

Frisch's Double-Double Powers Scots
MC senior Landry Frisch, the kill leader of the night, played a key role in sealing the win against Covenant, recording a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.

Brooke Oliver followed with 12 kills, pushing her season total to 97.

In her first home game back in the lineup, Kenzie Brewster posted an impressive .364 attack percentage.

"It feels great to be back at home. This was the first official game of my senior year," Brewster said. "My mindset was to come out strong. We wanted to stay composed and play our game, not worry about the other side. I feel like that's what we did — we stayed focused and we executed."

Maryville improved its record to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Covenant fell to 4-9 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

The Scots are in Jackson, Mississippi, this Sunday, with matches against Belhaven at noon Central time and Piedmont at 2 p.m Central.
