Scots Compete in Maryville College Invitational

MC Wins 13 of 23 Matches at Home Invitational

MARYVILLE – Maryville hosted its first spring invitational Friday and Saturday, competing both at the MC Tennis Courts and at John Sevier Park in the Maryville College Invitational.

The Scots won 13 of their 23 matches across the two-day event, facing off against Johnson, Truett McConnell, and Brevard players.

"We try to preach focusing on our quality and what we practice, but it was great to see our men go a combined 9-3 on Day 1," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "These matches are set up to be on a similar playing field, so certainly a good sign.

"Lots of feedback was gained for our student-athletes. They need to rest and study up, then go to work in the offseason."

MC won eight of its 10 matches on Friday, highlighted by a sweep of the two doubles matches. James Smith and Jackson Meyer won their match 6-3 while the first-year duo of Field Myatt and Pedro Cunha defeated their opponents by the same score.

Smith, Jackson, Myatt and Cunha also each picked up victories in their solo matches to go 2-0 on the day.

Gabriel Villalonga Serra won his singles match 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12). Eli Cauthorn rounded out the Scots victories on Friday, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1.

Maryville had less success on Day 2 of the invitational, winning five of its 12 matches on Saturday.

The Scots won two of their three doubles matches. Smith and Meyer once again handled their opponents, winning Saturday's match 6-2 while Villalonga Serra and Cauthorn handled their opponents 6-4.

Myatt, Meyer and Cauthorn each picked up singles victories for MC on Saturday.

"Hosting our first invitational was an awesome experience," Corbett said. "We had been waiting to get our courts redone before we hosted, but now we plan to host one every year in the fall going forward."

The Scots are back in action one more time this fall, heading to Rome, Georgia, to compete in the ITA South Regional on Friday and Saturday.
