GAME ONE
JACKSON, Miss. – The Maryville women's volleyball team displayed their domination in a 3-1 victory over the Belhaven Blazers. This victory increases Maryville to 21-7 overall and 12-3 in the conference, and the loss drops Belhaven to 11-18 overall and 6-9 in the CCS.
Belhaven started set one with a kill, but Maryville's
Ruby Walton responded with one of her own. After a quick Belhaven run, the Scots went on a seven-point run, featuring a service ace from Walton and a kill from
Kiana Kent, before a service error brought the Blazers back into the game, 9-6. Despite multiple Maryville runs, Belhaven was able to catch up each time, eventually regaining the lead, 23-22. After a final kill from
Cailin Mastropasqua, Maryville could not stop the Blazers, and Belhaven took set one, 25-23.
Kylie Wilhelmi started set two with a kill, which quickly prompted the Scots to go on an 8-2 scoring run before Belhaven could catch up at the 9-7 mark. Although the Scots inched forward with kills form
Kyrah Bowles,
Audry Neil,
Ava George Wilber, and
Kylie Wilhelmi, Belhaven kept fighting back. A final kill from
Dakota Vaiese ended set two in favor of the Scots, 25-22.
Maryville kicked off set three with a kill from Wilhelmi. Both teams were playing their aces, and neither was able to pull ahead far. When kills from Mastropasqua, Wilhelmi, George Wilber, and Walton would pull the Scots ahead, the Blazers would promptly add kills of their own. After a hard-fought battle, Mastropasqua and Wilhelmi pulled Maryville away from Belhaven, taking set three, 27-25.
The Scots quickly went to work in set four, going on an eight-point run after Belhaven's third point. Belhaven slowly chipped away at the damage dealt by Maryville, but when the score was set at 14-9, the Scots went on another run, increasing their gap to 20-9. After a few breaks from Blazer points, Wilhelmi finished off set four, 25-17.
GAME TWO
JACKSON, Miss. – The Maryville women's volleyball team solidified their spot in second in conference standings after a 3-0 victory over the Piedmont Lions. This win increases Maryville's record to 22-7 overall and 13-3 in the conference and dropped Piedmont to 7-24 overall and 4-11 in the CCS.
Piedmont kicked off set one with a kill, but Maryville's
Audry Neil responded with a point of her own. Despite going on short runs, the Lions could not close the gap created by the Scots early into the set. Kills from
Kylie Wilhelmi,
Ruby Walton,
Kiana Kent, and
Cailin Mastropasqua extended Maryville's lead, and the Lions quickly fell behind, 19-14. After a few interruptions from Piedmont, Wilhelmi was able to nail a final kill, earning set one, 25-16.
Piedmont earned the first point of set two, but quickly fell behind after multiple Lion attack errors and a service ace from
Katelyn Eldred. The Lions followed up with three points, taking a short-lived lead over the Scots. Maryville initiated dominant scoring, highlighted by kills from Wilhelmi, Kent, Mastropasqua, and Walton to pull ahead, 14-9. After a few back-and-forth points, kills from Wilhelmi and Walton, as well as a service ace from Mastropasqua increased the gap, 22-14. A Walton kill and two blocked points by George Wilber and Kent ended set three, 25-16.
Maryville came out swinging on set three and did not let up until the very end. Maryville took the first point after a Wilhelmi kill, and the Scots extended their lead with kills from Mastropasqua and Neil, as well as three service aces from
Maddie Bouvier. A Maryville service error and attack error interrupted scoring for the Scots, but Maryville promptly responded with an eight-point run featuring Kent, Wilhelmi, Walton, and Mastropasqua. Despite adding a few points of their own, a final Piedmont attack error ended set three, 25-7.
The Scots are back in action Saturday, November 8
th at 2:00 PM to take on Mississippi Women in their final regular season match.
