Scots Slam Door, Hold Off Roanoke

Senior Grannan Stalled Maroons' Comeback in Ninth to Secure Victory

MARYVILLE – Mitchell Grannan picked up his first save of the season as the senior tamed the Roanoke comeback, securing the 11-7 victory for the Scots.

Late Game Heroics
Threatening a comeback in the top of the ninth, the Maroons were down 11-4 to begin the inning. Roanoke was able to plate two runs in the inning before Grannan entered the game. The senior pitcher from Chattanooga took over on the mound with the bases loaded and two outs. In the dramatics of the inning, Grannan threw a wild pitch that was struck on and missed but resulted in the batter taking first base and the runner from third scoring, closing the gap even more to 11-7. With the tying run at the plate, Grannan was able to strike out Roanoke's Corey Coogan to complete the save for Maryville.

Fireworks

Like Friday's season opener, junior outfielder Colin Dunworth launched a two-run homer over the left field wall, bringing his RBI total to eight so far in the young season. Dunworth has scored in each game so far for the Scots, totaling an impressive .417 batting average while scoring five runs on five hits, two home runs, a triple, one stolen base, and one walk. Fielding wise, Dunworth is 1.000 on the season going 6/6 from right field.

"I get an omelet every single morning." Dunworth said when asked about his second home run of the year. "It comes down to consistency. Like having an omelet every morning, coming out here every day, getting my swings in with my teammates, we are all consistent and that is key to our success"

Having similar success in the game was Det Dettwiller, who scored two runs on two hits, and Jay Pichardo, who accumulated three RBIs on two hits. Ashton Whiteaker recorded two runs on two hits and one walk.

Winning Pitching

The winning pitcher, Pete Pappas, pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief for starter Caleb Jinks. Pappas faced 41 batters and allowed only two hits and two walks in his career debut.

Next Up
Looking ahead to this weekend's series with Oberlin, Dunworth noted, "We have to keep competing. We don't look at the record. Obviously, we beat them last year and they beat us, so we have to do what we can to keep playing our game."

Oberlin has yet to play a game this season and opens play against the Scots this weekend at Scotland Yard. Last year, the two teams split their games, with the Scots winning the first 8-5, and the Yeomen taking the second 2-0.

With this win, Maryville improves to 3-0 on the season.
