MARYVILLE - The Scots split their opening conference series with Asbury after winning the first game in shutout fashion 7-0 and dropping the finale 11-4.
First Game
Sophomore
Tia Stewart shined for the Scots as she pitched a complete seven-inning game where she allowed only one hit (in the top of the seventh). Stewart faced 23 batters and struck out six of them, walking only one.
Maryville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a
Ryleigh Maples double that scored
Olivia Harris and
Brecca Williams, after Williams singled to left field and Harris doubled to left field the previous at-bat.
Tate Romero would bring home
Ashtyn Barga on a hard hit single to center field in the bottom of the third to put the scotch up 4-0.
The final scores of the game came in the bottom of the fifth as
Ashtyn Barga reached first on an error and stole second (her second steal of the game). Romero would be walked the next at bat to give the Scots two base runners and no outs (
Lexi Esteppe would pinch run for Romero).
Campbell White would fly out to bring up
Jessica Harris. Harris would double to the left center wall and score Barga and advance Esteppe to third. Big-bat
Brecca Williams would singe to right center field and score Harris and Esteppe to bring the tally to 7-0.
Second Game
The finale of the series didn't have much favoring the Scots through the first five innings, after going down 8-1.
Ryleigh Maples would bring home
Paige Dickinson in the bottom of the third on a double to left field for the only run for the Scots through those innings.
The bottom of the fifth saw some life spark into MC, as Maples would hit a de facto inside-the-park home run, bringing three runs after doubling to left field and then advancing home on an error by the short stop. She scored
Brecca Williams and
Jessica Harris on the play as well. 8-4 Asbury.
The Eagles would counter back all three runs scored by Maryville, as they scored thrice in the top of the sixth on a sac fly to right field and then a two-run homer to go up 11-4, which proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Scots.
With the split, Maryville now sits at 7-13 and 1-1 on the year while Asbury improved to 8-6, 1-3.
MC is back in action Sunday against Huntingdon in another doubleheader at home. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
