MC Completes Series at WashU

Scots Fall 4-1; Bears Take 2 of 3 in Series

ST. LOUIS – Maryville struck for an unearned run in the first inning, but WashU pitching limited the Scots to two hits in a 4-1 decision. The Sunday win for the host Bears gave them the series, 2 games to 1.

With one out, Colin Dunworth was hit by a pitch and moved around to third when Ashton Whiteaker reached second on a Bears throwing error. Frank Derner followed with a clean single up the middle to plate Dunworth and put the Scots in front 1-0.

But that was all the offense the visitors could muster as Washington's Hank Weiss and Isaac Zhang were superb on the mound. Weiss (1-1) went seven innings for the victory, allowing both Maryville hits and striking out nine against just one walk. Zhang pitched a perfect two innings for his first save, striking out two of the six batters he faced.

The Maryville pitching lineup of Caleb Jinks, Pete Pappas, Xavier Resto and Mitchell Grannen were good enough to get the Scots a win on most days. Jinks went the first 4 and 2-3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Resto and Grannen combined for three innings of hitless relief, with Grannen striking out six.

Derner had both Maryville hits, contributing a one-out double in the fourth inning before he was stranded at third with two outs.

Maryville continues its streak of 10 straight road games with a Tuesday trip to Sewanee. First pitch is 3 p.m. Central time. The Scots are at Huntingdon for a Collegiate Conference of the South series this weekend and then at Asbury for another three-game conference slate on April 4-5.
