Maryville Takes Game One of Crucial Conference Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Maryville Scots took down Huntingdon on Friday night thanks to explosive fifth and sixth innings that scored eight total runs, leading the Scots to a 12-6 victory.

Junior Kyle Timko would get the start on the mound for Maryville and would pitch 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Timko earned the win, improving his record to 5-1 on the season, and his ERA now sits at 3.54, best on the team.

Johnny Ruggerio Jr. pitched an inning in relief, then Xaiver Resto finished the game for the Scots, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up just one hit to close things out.

Offensively for MC, the stars of the night were Reece Jordan, Colin Dunworth, and Matt Hall. Jordan went a perfect 5-5, scoring three runs. Dunworth batted in five runners on four hits and scored four runs of his own, and walked once. Hall had three hits in five at-bats and scored two runs.

The game started off with a bang after Reece Jordan singled up the middle in the first at-bat of the game. Colin Dunworth hit his fifth home run of the year, a two-run bomb to give Maryville the 2-0 lead. Huntingdon would counter with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first.

And would you know it, Dunworth hit his sixth home run of the game his next at bat in the third inning, a solo shot to give the Scots a 3-1 lead.

Maryville started to break things open in the fifth inning. Reece Jordan would hit another single to lead off the inning. Dunworth would reach on a fielder's choice, and Jordan would get to second on an error by the second baseman. The two would advance a base each on a passed ball, moving them both to scoring position. Ashton Whiteaker would be next up and hit a sac fly to right field, but would get on base after the right fielder dropped the ball. Jordan and Dunworth would both score on the play.

Nick Curry would reach first on a play that would be ruled an error, but it was a hard hit ball to right field, and Curry would sprint all the way to third on the play. Whiteaker would score, bringing the score to 6-1 Scots.

The sixth inning was even more action-packed and saw MC Score five runs on six hits. Colin Dunworth would get his fourth RBI of the game on a single up the middle that plated Reece Jordan and Matt Hall. Frank Derner singled through the right side, scoring Dunworth. Ashton Whiteaker, who had a single to get on base and advance third on an error, scored on a passed ball. Daniel Montaña would single up the middle next, scoring Durner. 11-1 Scots after six.

Matt Hall would score in the seventh on an Ashton Whiteaker fielder's choice, which would end the scoring for Maryville at 12 runs.

The Hawks would gain back five runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to try to make the game interesting, bringing the game to 12-6 after eight. Xavier Resto would sit down the last batter for Huntingdon on a swinging strike, securing the victory for the Scots and giving them a one-up heading into the second game of the series.
