MARYVILLE – Maryville pulled a measure of revenge against Johnson & Wales Charlotte here Saturday afternoon in a 7-0 sweep of the visiting Wildcats.
The Scots swept the doubles matches and then won four tiebreakers to make it a clean sweep in singles. Saturday's win coupled with Thursday's 4-3 triumph over Huntingdon lifts Maryville to 8-5 overall with three upcoming home matches on the docket.
The scores were 6-1 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts, with
James Smith and
Luka Romano winning for Maryville at the top line and
Jackson Meyer and
Field Myatt getting it done at the second slot. At No. 3 doubles,
Eli Cauthorn and
Jonathan Crane combined for a 6-3 triumph.
Myatt made it 2-0 Scots at No. 3 singles with the most convincing win of the second half of the match, 6-2, 6-0.
Ian Martin followed at No. 5 with a 7-5, 6-4 decision, and then Smith kept his winning streak going at No. 1 singles. He prevailed for the sixth straight match at with a 6-2, 6-2 victory and is now 10-2 in dual match singles this season.
That clinched the match for the Scots.
Maryville kept the momentum moving forward as
Gabriel Villalonga Serra won a third-set tiebreaker to finish off a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) decision. At No. 2 singles, Romano fought for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory and then Crane made it a clean sweep with a 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) decision at No. 4.
"It was a good weekend for Maryville Men's Tennis," Scots head coach
Doug Corbett said. "Feels like playing in our friendly confines at home has been a shot in the arm for some of the guys. Doubles looked much more like what we want to see, and it was a very good effort to not drop any of the singles.
"JWU beat us last year and they didn't lose much at all off that team. This match is one that really illustrates our growth as a program. I'm really proud of the guys."
Maryville is back in action next Saturday against LaGrange for Senior Day. Matches start at 1 p.m.
